Why Is It Important to Know Your Identity in Christ?

Knowing your identity in Christ is foundational to the Christian faith. As believers, our core identity is in Jesus – who He is and what He has done for us. When we understand our position in Christ, it changes everything! In this comprehensive blog post, we will explore biblical truths about our identity in Christ and why it matters so much.

Introduction

As Christians, it’s easy to go through life without fully grasping who we are in Jesus. We may understand that Jesus died for our sins, but fail to grasp the profound implications of our spiritual rebirth. The New Testament refers to believers as “new creations” (2 Corinthians 5:17), with a new heart, mind, and spirit. Yet many of us continue to see ourselves as unchanged sinners, still defined by our pasts.

Knowing your identity in Christ is crucial for living in freedom, bearing spiritual fruit, and fulfilling your God-given destiny. When you forget who you are in Jesus, it’s like forgetting your own name! You’ll flounder aimlessly because you’ve lost your sense of purpose and belonging.

In this post, we will explore key biblical truths about the believer’s identity in Christ. We’ll discuss:

  • Being adopted as God’s children
  • Bearing Christ’s righteousness
  • Being seated in the heavenlies with Jesus
  • Having bold access to God’s throne
  • Being a temple of the Holy Spirit
  • Being delivered from the power of sin
  • Possessing everlasting life

Understanding these realities will empower and equip you to live in victory. You’ll be launched into your divine calling as a child of the King!

  • You have been commissioned as an ambassador for Christ on the earth.
  • You have been given supernatural power and authority in Jesus’ name.
  • You are destined to reign and rule with Christ for eternity.

These incredible truths about your identity in Jesus form the foundation for victorious Christian living. As you renew your mind to these realities, you’ll begin to live in greater alignment with your spiritual rebirth. Now let’s explore the biblical basis for each of these identity statements.

You Are Fully Loved and Accepted by God as His Child

The Bible teaches that when you placed your faith in Jesus Christ, you were spiritually reborn as a child of God. You gained a new identity and family lineage:

“Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” (John 1:12-13)

Through spiritual rebirth, you were adopted into God’s family:

“For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”” (Romans 8:15)

Since you are now a child of God, you can relate to Him as your perfect heavenly Father. You have unlimited access to His love, resources, and blessings as His cherished son or daughter:

“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.” (1 John 3:1)

As a child of God, you are fully accepted and approved by your heavenly Father. You no longer need to strive for validation or acceptance because you already have it in Jesus:

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 8:1)

This incredible grace revolutionizes self-image issues. You are a dearly loved, accepted child of the Most High God. Meditate on this beautiful reality!

You Have Been Made Perfectly Righteous by Christ’s Work

A major part of your identity shift as a Christian is that Jesus imputed His perfect righteousness to you. When you placed faith in Him, your sin was fully paid for on the cross. The Bible says:

“God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Corinthians 5:21)

Although you still occasionally sin, your core identity is now one of perfect righteousness before God. You are covered by Jesus’ sinless record:

“This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” (Romans 3:22-24)

Your righteousness is not based on your performance but on Christ’s finished work. This protects you from spiritual insecurity. Even when you mess up, you remain the righteousness of God in Jesus!

You Have Direct Access to God’s Throne and Power

Under the old covenant, only the high priest could enter God’s presence in the most holy place once per year. But Jesus’ sacrifice tore the temple veil, giving us unlimited access to God’s throne!

“Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body…” (Hebrews 10:19-20)

You can now boldly approach God’s throne to find grace and help whenever you need it:

“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16)

This complete access empowers you to conquer challenges through prayer. You can tap directly into God’s wisdom, resources, and power!

You Are a Temple of the Holy Spirit

In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit came upon prophets temporarily for specific tasks. But as a born again believer, the Holy Spirit permanently lives inside your spirit:

“Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?” (1 Corinthians 3:16)

You have become a mobile temple, a constant dwelling place for God’s presence! This provides the power, guidance, and supernatural ability you need to fulfill your purpose:

“We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith” (Romans 12:6)

The Holy Spirit flowing through you gives you access to all of God’s spiritual gifts and power. You can walk in supernatural authority because Greater is He who is in you!

You Have Been Set Free From Sin’s Power

Before salvation, sin easily entangled and derailed you. But through spiritual rebirth, sin’s penalty and controlling power over you was broken:

“We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.” (Romans 6:6)

Although you may still struggle with sinful behaviors at times, sin is no longer your master. You’ve been set free to walk in increasing righteousness by the enabling grace of God:

“But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.” (Romans 6:17-18)

Sin’s tyranny over you has been stripped away. You now have power through Christ to walk in holiness!

You Have Passed from Death into Eternal Life

A monumental aspect of your reborn identity is that you have everlasting life in Jesus Christ. You permanently crossed over from spiritual death into the abundant life of God:

“Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.” (John 5:24)

The imperishable life of God now flows through your spirit. You are a partaker of eternal life beginning the moment you believed:

“And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.” (1 John 5:11-12)

This eternal life inoculates you from the sting of death. Your spirit will transcend to glory as you inherit all of God’s promises in Jesus!

You Are a Citizen of Heaven Seated with Christ

When you repented and believed in Jesus, you became a citizen of God’s kingdom. Your true home is now in heaven:

“But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ” (Philippians 3:20)

Although you live on earth for now, spiritually you have been seated with Christ in the heavenlies. You have been given dominion, authority, and reigning power in Jesus:

“And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 2:6)

Your citizenship empowers you to operate in supernatural kingdom authority on earth as Jesus’ ambassador. You’ve been spiritually elevated to reign with Christ!

You Have Been Commissioned as Christ’s Ambassador

As a citizen of heaven, you have been commissioned as Christ’s ambassador on the earth. You now represent Jesus and His kingdom in all you do:

“We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.” (2 Corinthians 5:20)

Your words and actions carry spiritual authority to push back darkness and see God’s will done on earth. This ambassadorship empowers your spiritual identity and purpose.

You’ve been delegated to expand God’s kingdom as heaven’s authorized representative wherever you go!

You Have Been Given Supernatural Power and Authority

Along with your royal ambassadorship comes the supernatural power and authority of Jesus Christ Himself:

“And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal.” (Luke 9:1-2)

In Jesus’ name, you can heal the sick, cast out demons, speak prophetically, and manifest God’s glory through miracles. These signs demonstrate that God’s kingdom has arrived:

“For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power.” (1 Corinthians 4:20)

Through faith and obedience, you can walk in tremendous supernatural power because of who you are in Christ. Expect to live and minister in the miraculous!

You Are Destined to Reign With Christ for Eternity

In Christ, you not only have power and authority now, but you are also destined to reign with Him for eternity:

“If we endure, we will also reign with him.” (2 Timothy 2:12)

During the millennium and for all the ages to come, you will reign with Christ over His kingdom. You will even judge angels:

“Or do you not know that the Lord’s people will judge the world? … Do you not know that we will judge angels?” (1 Corinthians 6:2-3)

Your destiny in Jesus is nothing short of royalty. You will reign forever with Christ as a king and priest!

Conclusion: Walking in Your Reborn Identity

Knowing these truths about your identity in Christ is the foundation for freedom, fruitfulness, and fulfilling your destiny. You have been made righteous, reborn, empowered, cleansed, commissioned, adopted, accepted, authoritative, and destined for reigning rule!

When you renew your mind to these realities, it will transform how you see yourself and live. You’ll gain greater victory over sin as you walk in God’s grace. The Holy Spirit within will lead you into spiritual gifting and supernatural ministry. You’ll grow into the character and power of the reborn new creation you are in Christ.
