What Does the Bible Say About Being a Godly Man?

Introduction

In today’s world, the definition of manhood is often blurred, and the expectations of society can sometimes contradict what the Bible teaches. However, as Christian men, we are called to a higher standard of living.

We are to be men who live according to God’s word, who honor Him in all we do, and who strive to be examples of godliness to those around us. In this blog post, we will explore what the Bible has to say about being a godly man.

What does the bible say about being a godly man?

The Foundation of Godly Manhood: Relationship with God

The Bible teaches us that being a godly man starts with our relationship with God. In Psalm 1:1-3, we read that a man who delights in the law of the Lord and meditates on it day and night is like a tree planted by the rivers of water, which brings forth its fruit in its season.

This means that a godly man is someone who has a deep love for God’s word and who continually seeks to know and obey it.

As men, we are called to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:30). This means that our relationship with God should be the most important thing in our lives. We are to seek Him first and foremost, and everything else will fall into place (Matthew 6:33).

A godly man is someone who not only has a relationship with God but also seeks to live out that relationship in every aspect of his life. This includes his relationships with others, his work, and his leisure time.

The Characteristics of a Godly Man

The Bible provides us with a clear picture of what a godly man looks like. In 1 Timothy 3:1-7, we read about the qualifications of a bishop, which can also be applied to all Christian men. These characteristics include:

1. Above Reproach

A godly man is someone who lives a life that is above reproach. He is a man of integrity who is honest and trustworthy in all his dealings with others. He avoids even the appearance of evil and seeks to live a life that is pleasing to God.

2. Temperate

A godly man is someone who has self-control. He is not controlled by his passions or desires but rather by the Holy Spirit. He exercises discipline in all areas of his life, including his thoughts, actions, and emotions.

As Christian men, we are called to play specific roles in our families, our churches, and our communities. These roles include:

1. Leader

A godly man is someone who leads by example. He takes responsibility for his own actions and seeks to inspire others to do the same. He is a man of vision who is able to guide others towards a common goal

Examples of Godly Men in the Bible

Throughout the Bible, we see many examples of godly men who lived according to God’s word and were used by Him in powerful ways. Here are just a few examples:

1. Joseph

Joseph was a man of integrity who was sold into slavery by his own brothers. Despite his circumstances, he remained faithful to God and eventually became the second-in-command in Egypt. He was able to use his position to save his family and the entire nation from famine.

2. David

David was a man after God’s own heart. He was a skilled warrior, a poet, and a musician. Despite his flaws and mistakes, he always returned to God and sought His forgiveness. He was also a great leader, who united the kingdom of Israel and established it as a powerful nation.

3. Daniel

Daniel was a man of great faith and courage. He refused to bow down to the king’s statue and was thrown into the lions’ den as a result. God protected him from harm, and he was eventually promoted to a high position in the king’s court.

He remained faithful to God even when it was difficult, and God used him to bring about great change in the world.

Biblical Teachings on Sexuality and Purity

One of the greatest challenges facing Christian men in today’s society is the issue of sexuality and purity. The Bible teaches us that sexual intimacy is reserved for marriage between one man and one woman (Genesis 2:24, Matthew 19:5-6).

We are also warned against sexual immorality and impurity (1 Corinthians 6:18-20).

As men, we are called to flee from sexual immorality and to pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace (2 Timothy 2:22). We are to guard our hearts and minds against impure thoughts and desires (Philippians 4:8). We are also called to treat all women with respect and honor (1 Peter 3:7).

The Importance of Accountability

In order to live a godly life, we need the support and accountability of other Christian men. We are called to confess our sins to one another and to pray for each other (James 5:16). We are also called to spur one another on towards love and good deeds (Hebrews 10:24).

Having an accountability partner or being part of a men’s group can be extremely beneficial in our walk with God. It provides a safe place to share our struggles and to receive encouragement and support from other men who are also striving to live a godly life.

Conclusion

Being a godly man is not easy, but it is a calling that we as Christian men must strive towards. It starts with our relationship with God and our willingness to obey His word. We must seek to live a life that is above reproach, exercising self-control and treating others with respect and kindness.

As men, we have specific roles to play in our families, our churches, and our communities. We must be leaders, protectors, providers, and servants, willing to put the needs of others before our own.

We can look to the examples of godly men in the Bible, such as Joseph, David, and Daniel, and strive to live our lives in the same way.

Living a godly life also means guarding our hearts and minds against sexual immorality and impurity. We must treat all women with respect and honor and flee from sexual temptation.

Finally, we need the support and accountability of other Christian men in our lives. We must confess our sins to one another and spur one another on towards love and good deeds.

In conclusion, being a godly man is a calling that requires us to constantly seek after God and His word. We must strive to live a life that is above reproach, fulfilling our roles as leaders, protectors, providers, and servants.

We must guard our hearts and minds against sexual temptation and impurity, treating all women with respect and honor. And we must surround ourselves with other Christian men who will hold us accountable and support us in our walk with God. May we all strive to be the godly men that God has called us to be.
