To the first servant he gave five talents, to the second two talents and the third was given a single talent. After that, the master left on a journey of a long duration.



When the master returns, he calls each servant in turn and asks them what they did with the talents he entrusted to them. The first servant reveals that he had invested the five talents and doubled them to ten. The second servant shares that he had also worked hard and doubled his two talents to four.



The master was pleased with the first two servants’ efforts. However, the third servant had hidden the one talent given to him instead of using it to generate a return because he was fearful of the master. The third servant’s lack of action resulted in his talent being taken away from him and given to the other two servants.



The parable of the Talents serves as a reminder of the great responsibility we have when it comes to our skills, abilities and resources. It teaches us to take charge of our lives, our goals and to take initiative, even in the face of uncertainty and fear. As with the first two servants, we must utilize the tools at our disposal to generate a positive return that can help us to become successful. If we are not proactive and work for the return, the opportunity may be taken away from us.
