What Are Signs And Wonders In The Bible? [And How To See Them]

Signs And Wonders Shall Follow Them That Believe

There is a fad within Christendom that doesn’t seem to want to go away. It is the fad of people always chasing after signs and wonders.

It is one thing for non-believers to be drawn by signs and wonders. That is their purpose. However, it is another thing when believers go chasing after the latest sign or wonder.

In Marks gospel chapter 16 it says,

Mark 16:17-18
These miraculous signs will accompany those who believe: They will cast out demons in my name, and they will speak in new languages. 18 They will be able to handle snakes with safety, and if they drink anything poisonous, it won’t hurt them. They will be able to place their hands on the sick, and they will be healed.”

Notice that it says that miraculous signs will accompany those that have become believers in Jesus.

If this is supposed to be the way it happens then why in the heck do we have Christian people traveling all over the nation and even the world to “experience” a miracle service?

Could it be that we have the wrong perspective concerning signs and/or wonders?
Could it be that we are wanting to be part of a miracle service rather than to do what it takes to be the conduit of miracle power?

Are we so event-centered that we don’t even think that the miraculous can be a part of our Christian walk?

Have we segregated our Christian life to such a point that we only expect God to show up at a church service or event?

The Meaning Of Signs And Wonders In The Bible

The Greek word for sign is “semeion.” In the context of the scripture in Mark 16 where it says that signs God confirmed the message of the gospel with “signs” following it means,

“Miracles and wonders by which God authenticates the men sent by him, or by which men prove that the cause they are pleading is God’s.”

Signs and wonders are God’s supernatural miraculous power breaking into the natural world of man and doing what is impossible by natural physical laws.

The Purpose of Signs and Wonders

Signs and wonders have a specific purpose in the advancement of the kingdom of God. Those who have believed already know that God is good and that He has an unfailing love for us. Those that do not think so have not experienced this great truth.

The purpose of these miraculous works is the supernatural physical expression of goodness and unfailing love to those unbelievers. Take a look at this passage in the book of Acts

Acts 5:12-16
12 The apostles were performing many miraculous signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers were meeting regularly at the Temple in the area known as Solomon’s Colonnade. 13 But no one else dared to join them, even though all the people had high regard for them. 14 Yet more and more people believed and were brought to the Lord – crowds of both men and women. 15 As a result of the apostles’ work, sick people were brought out into the streets on beds and mats so that Peter’s shadow might fall across some of them as he went by. 16 Crowds came from the villages around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those possessed by evil spirits, and they were all healed.

Notice that the first thing the passage says is that the apostles were doing signs and wonders among the people.

Now at first glance, we might assume that they were doing these signs and wonders among the believers. However, in verse 13 it clearly states that the believers that were associated with them did not dare to join them.

So who were the people that they were doing these miraculous things among? It is among non-believers.

The miracles were causing non-believers to come to faith in Jesus. Notice it is the people away from the church that is coming and seeing the miraculous. Crowds came from the suburbs of Jerusalem so they could get a miracle.

It is evident that signs and wonders are to follow those that believe, and not that believers chased after them.

What Are The Keys To Signs and Wonders In Your Life?

Many people try to teach that there is a specific formula or ritual that you need to follow to be blessed with the gift of miracles. Unfortunately, this teaching on the miraculous is not true.

There is only one way to have the power of God in your life. It is by spending time with Jesus and Jesus and you become so intimate that you walk as He walked.

Notice what it says in Acts chapter 4. I am going to use the NKJV version of the Bible because it makes it more apparent.

Acts 4:13-14
13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus. 14 And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.

Notice the three things that the men noticed in this passage.

  1. They saw that Peter and John were untrained and uneducated.
  2. The saw the evidence of the miraculous healing of the man.
  3. They realized that Peter and John had been with Jesus.

That realization is the key to having signs and wonders in your life. To the level that you spend time with Jesus is the level you will walk in miraculous power.

There is a reason for this. If miracle-working power were given without the time spent with Jesus, then that power would be abused.

It is the time spent with Jesus that matures and strengthens a person so that they will yield this power responsibly.

If You Are Praying For Signs And Wonders, Try Praying To Know Jesus

Right now, are you listening?

Jesus wants to use you with signs and wonders. Will you answer the call to spend time with Him and just Him?

Will you believe what He said when He spoke the words

“signs shall follow those that believe”?

Will you spend the time it takes to have these signs and wonders in your life? If so, then don’t look for signs and wonders at some meeting or by some evangelist and let signs and wonders follow you.

  1. Does God occasionally present a believer with physical gifts such as gems, stones and gold dust from heaven? Is this even biblical?
