7 Ways To Resist The Devil And Make Him Flee

The devil may act like a roaring lion, but Jesus is the Lion of Judah.

Many Christians have not been taught how to resist the devil. It is not hard to make him flee from you. People like to make it sound hard.

I am not the type of person that goes around trying to figure out all the wiles and ways that the devil works to snare us. In all honesty, I think that there is too much teaching on this subject.

I think that when we focus on the devil all the time it makes him happy. It was his desire for attention that got him thrown out of heaven in the first place, and I don’t think that he has changed his ways.

We may learn to bind the devil up, but if we did so by placing undue attention upon him, in the end, he is smiling the whole time he is tied.

With that being said, I do believe that we need to be aware of the things we can do to resist the devil and make the devil go away and stop tormenting our lives.

Here are seven fundamental principles you can use to make the devil flee from you and stop interfering in your life.

resist the devil and he will flee

7 Key Principles To Help You Resist The Devil And Make Him Flee

#1 Submit To God

Submission and surrender are not subjects that are taught often in the church anymore. Obedience may not be titillating to our flesh, but it is the foundation of living a life free of satanic influence.

None of us are perfect, and I am not talking about trying to live up to the requirements of the law. But I am talking about surrendering to God’s will for your life and walking in obedience to what He has told you to do both by His Spirit and by what He has revealed to you in the Bible. James says to submit to God.

Start by taking inventory of your life.

Ask the Lord if there is any area of your life that is not under submission to Him. Surrender those things to Him and submit to His will in your life.

Not always will these things be bad things in and of themselves.

When I was in Bible college, I had a lot of musical instruments. I had been in more than one Christian rock band. As God was calling me to pastoral ministry, He asked me to sell those instruments to pay for college.

A big struggle ensued because my identity was in being a Christian rocker. Musical instruments are not wrong, but if they are not part of His will for your life, then they can become a problem.

I am so glad today that I listened to the Spirit of God and chose the life He had for me. What I received after I surrendered was much more satisfying than being a Christian rock, and roll superstar could ever have been.

#2 Come Into Agreement With God

Many people think that repentance is when you weep and mourn because of how much a sinner you are. It means to change your mind and direction.

If there are areas in your life where you are not living in agreement with the way God would have you live your life, then change your mind and direction. Come into agreement with God.

Many times this has to do with issues of unforgiveness or bitterness. You cannot resist the devil when you are doing the devils work by keeping those people in prisons of unforgiveness and bitterness. You have to release them and come into agreement that you are a person who walks by grace because you have received grace.

Come into agreement with what God says about you and others. You are the redeemed, the forgiven, the blood-bought, and those that have received right standing with God by faith in Christ.

#3 Be Confident That God Is On Your Side

Romans 8:31
What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us?

In the battle against Satan, there is no doubt. God is on your side. Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil.

However, sometimes we feel that we are not worthy, have brought the devil upon ourselves or that God won’t use us for whatever reason.

This is a lie from the devil himself. None of us are worthy, that is why Jesus came. We inherited His worthiness. So be rest assured my friend. God is on your side.

#4 Realize The Victory Is Yours To Be had.

Romans 8:37
37 No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.

If you go up against the enemy expecting defeat, you will give up and cede defeat before the victory is won.

You need to understand that we are warring from a position that the enemy is already defeated by Jesus. We are just enforcing that defeat.

Matthew 16:18
Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.

The powers of hell will not conquer the church.

That means that hell is already defeated. Realize that you are just enforcing what has already been declared by Jesus Himself.

#5 Praise And Worship Your Way To Victory

When Moses won the victory over Pharaoh, they sang a song of victory. (Exodus 15:2)

When Joshua conquered the city of Jericho, it was through praise and worship. (Joshua 6)

When Jehoshaphat was under attack by the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mt. Seir, the victory was won through praise. God inhabits the praises of His people. (Psalm 22:3)

That means that He is enthroned when His people praise Him. The rule and reign of His kingdom become established when we praise Him.

Satan cannot stand when the kingdom of God comes into a situation.

#6 Put On The Armor Of God.

Many people make putting on the armor of God difficult. They outline a complete procedure for accomplishing this task.

It is not all that difficult. It means to put on Jesus.

Take a look at the passage in question in Ephesians.

Ephesians 6:10-17

10 A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. 12 For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. 14 Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. 15 For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. 16 In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. 17 Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Each of those pieces can be found in our relationship with Jesus.

  • He is the truth. (John 14:6)
  • He is our righteousness. (Romans 3:24)
  • He is our peace. (Romans 5:1)
  • He is the author and finisher of our faith. (Hebrews 12:2)
  • He is our salvation. (Hebrews 2:10) and
  • He is the word of God. (John 1:1)

#7 Watch And Pray

After the passage, we just looked at it says to be alert and persistently pray. (Ephesians 6:18)

The enemy is a coward. He looks for people who he can catch unaware and unprepared.

When you are persistently on the watch and prayed up, He does not want to mess with you because you are not an easy target.

So the final way to resist the devil keep the devil away from your life is to stay alert and prayed up.

I can guarantee it that if you put these seven keys for resisting the devil and making the devil flee from you into practice in your life, you will see a whole lot more victory and a whole lot less defeat in your life.

You will not be hindered and hampered by the enemy of our souls anymore, and you won’t have to give him any undue attention that makes him smile. You will make him run like…..well you know….the devil!
