Moses’ Early Life

Moses was born into a Hebrew family during a time when the Israelites were enslaved in Egypt. His mother, Jochebed, hid him in a basket and sent him down the Nile River to escape the Pharaoh’s decree that all Hebrew baby boys be killed.

Moses was found by Pharaoh’s daughter, who took him in and raised him as her own son.

Despite his privileged upbringing, Moses never forgot his Hebrew roots. When he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew slave, he killed the Egyptian and fled Egypt, fearing for his life. Moses spent the next 40 years as a shepherd in Midian, where he married and had children.

Moses’ Encounter with God

One day, while tending his flock, Moses saw a burning bush that was not consumed by the fire. As he approached the bush, God spoke to him, revealing himself as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

God told Moses that he had been chosen to lead the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt and into the Promised Land.

At first, Moses was hesitant, feeling unworthy of such a task. But God reassured him, promising to be with him every step of the way. Moses eventually agreed to take on the role of leader, and he returned to Egypt to confront Pharaoh and demand the release of his people.

Moses’ Characteristics

Faith

One of the most prominent characteristics of Moses is his faith. Despite his initial reluctance to take on the role of leader, Moses trusted in God and relied on his guidance throughout his journey.

When the Israelites were trapped between the Red Sea and the pursuing Egyptian army, Moses cried out to God, who parted the waters and allowed the Israelites to pass through safely. Moses’ faith in God never wavered, even in the face of great adversity.

Moses’ faith in God was so strong that he was willing to endure the suffering of his people in order to fulfill God’s plan. When God revealed his name to Moses at the burning bush, he also gave him a message to deliver to the Israelites.

However, the message was not one of immediate deliverance from slavery. Instead, God told Moses that he would bring the Israelites out of Egypt, but only after he had demonstrated his power through a series of plagues.

Despite the fact that this message would mean even more suffering for the Israelites in the short-term, Moses trusted in God’s plan and delivered the message faithfully.

Humility

Another characteristic of Moses is his humility. Despite his position as the leader of the Israelites, Moses never saw himself as superior to his fellow Hebrews.

In fact, he often pleaded with God to spare the Israelites from his wrath and begged for their forgiveness. Moses’ humility is perhaps most evident in his famous line from Exodus 3:11, when he asked God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”

Moses’ humility was also evident in his willingness to admit when he was wrong. When the Israelites rebelled against God and built a golden calf to worship, Moses was angry and broke the tablets containing the Ten Commandments.

However, when he realized the gravity of his actions, he went back up the mountain to plead for God’s forgiveness and to receive a new set of tablets.

Courage

Moses also demonstrated great courage throughout his journey.

He fearlessly confronted Pharaoh, demanding that he let the Israelites go free, even though he knew that it could lead to his own death. He stood up to the rebellious Israelites when they grumbled and complained in the wilderness, and he remained steadfast in his faith despite the many challenges he faced.

Moses’ courage was perhaps most evident when he faced the Red Sea. With the Egyptian army fast approaching, Moses could have given up and allowed his people to be recaptured. Instead, he remained faithful to God and trusted that he would provide a way out.

As a result, the Red Sea was miraculously parted, and the Israelites were able to cross to safety.

Obedience

Finally, Moses was obedient to God’s commands, even when they seemed difficult or impossible to follow. He faithfully delivered God’s message to Pharaoh, even though he knew it would likely result in further suffering for the Israelites.

He followed God’s instructions to the letter when he led the Israelites out of Egypt, and he never wavered in his commitment to God’s plan for his people.

Moses’ obedience was perhaps most tested when God commanded him to strike a rock in order to bring forth water for the Israelites. Instead of following God’s specific instructions,

Moses struck the rock twice. As a result, he was prevented from entering the Promised Land. Despite this setback, Moses remained obedient to God until the end of his life.

Moses’ Legacy

Moses’ legacy is an enduring one, both in Jewish and Christian tradition. He is remembered as a great leader and prophet, as well as a faithful servant of God.

His story is an inspiration to people of all ages and backgrounds, reminding us that even the most humble and unlikely of individuals can be used by God to accomplish great things.

In the New Testament, Moses is often seen as a foreshadowing of Christ, who would come to lead his people out of slavery to sin and into eternal life. Like Moses, Christ was willing to endure suffering and sacrifice in order to fulfill God’s plan for humanity.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Moses’ story is a powerful reminder of the importance of faith, humility, courage, and obedience in our lives as believers. Through his unwavering trust in God, even in the face of great adversity,

Moses serves as a model for how we can navigate the challenges and struggles of our own lives. His humility and obedience to God’s will remind us that even the greatest leaders are nothing without the guidance and direction of God.

As we reflect on Moses’ story, we are also reminded of the many ways in which his legacy continues to inspire people around the world today.

Whether through the Passover celebration in Jewish tradition or the many references to Moses in Christian scripture, Moses’ impact on our faith and culture cannot be overstated. His story continues to offer hope and guidance to believers of all backgrounds, reminding us of the enduring power of God’s love and grace.

May we all strive to live lives of faith, humility, courage, and obedience to God, just as Moses did. Let us never forget the example that he set for us, and the many ways in which his story continues to inspire us to this day.

May we continue to look to his legacy as a source of strength and guidance, as we seek to fulfill God’s plan for our own lives and for the world around us.
