Fascinating Stories of Fear in the Bible You Must Read

Introduction

The Bible is packed with stories of fear. People are scared of different things, and the Bible has a story for every fear imaginable.

Some people are scared of snakes, so they read the story of Moses and the snake in the desert. Some people are scared of heights, so they read the story of David and Goliath. And some people are scared of being alone, so they read the story of Ruth.

No matter your fear, the Bible has a story for you. These stories are designed to teach us about fear and overcoming it. So if you’re feeling scared today, why not pick up a Bible and read one of these fascinating stories?

Stories of Fear in the Bible

Moses vs. Pharaoh’s Fear and the Ten Plagues of Egypt

As the Israelites were preparing to leave Egypt, Pharaoh got scared. He wanted the Israelites to stay, but God had other plans. Pharaoh’s fear led to the Ten Plagues of Egypt, which were devastating and caused many deaths.

Moses, on the other hand, faced his fears head-on. He was willing to go against Pharaoh and do whatever it took to free his people. Moses didn’t back down when things got tough—he was fearless in the face of fear.

Gideon Overcoming Fear and the Battle of Midian

The next story you need to read is that of Gideon. He was a judge of Israel who God called to save His people from the Midianites. The thing is, Gideon was very afraid. He was so scared that he tried to get out of the mission multiple times.

But God would not let Gideon get out of this so quickly. He kept appearing to him in dreams and telling him that He had chosen him for this task. And finally, Gideon realized he could not run from his fear—he had to face it head-on.

This led him to do something very brave: he led an army against the Midianites, even though he was outnumbered 10 to 1. And God helped him win! This is an excellent example of overcoming our fears with faith in God.

Samson and His Struggle With Fear

The Bible is full of fascinating stories, and some of them are about fear. The story of Samson is one such story. Samson was a man with incredible strength, but he had a weakness for women. He was tricked by a woman named Delilah, who convinced him to tell her the secret of his strength. Once she knew the secret, she betrayed him to his enemies. Samson was captured and blinded.

While Samson was in prison, he prayed to God for strength. God answered his prayer and gave him the strength to pull down the pillars of the prison, killing himself and his enemies.

The story of Samson shows that even the strongest people can struggle with fear. Samson’s story reminds us that we should all pray for strength when facing our fears.

Peter’s Denial of Jesus Out of Fear

One of the most well-known stories of fear in the Bible is Peter’s denial of Jesus. When Jesus was arrested by the Roman soldiers and taken away, Peter feared for his life and wanted to escape. So he followed Jesus from a safe distance, but when a maid asked him whether he was one of Jesus’ disciples, Peter immediately denied it out of fear.

In moments like this, it’s easy to focus on Peter’s cowardice and forget that he had seen what been done to Jesus and was scared for his safety. He also wasn’t prepared for someone to call him out on his association with Jesus. Fear often surprises us and can drive us to do things we never thought possible.

Like all stories of fear in the Bible, there is an important lesson here—fear can have a powerful hold on us and lead us down a path we never intended to take. But if we remind ourselves of God’s promise that “perfect love casts out fear” (1 John 4:18), then perhaps we can rise above it and make wise choices instead.

Daniel in the Lions’ Den Overcoming Fear

Daniel is one of the Bible’s most remarkable characters. The book of Daniel tells the story of Daniel’s faith and courage in the face of fear. When King Darius threw Daniel into a den full of hungry lions, Daniel held fast to his faith in God’s protection. Daniel emerged unscathed despite King Darius’ keeping him in the den overnight.

This story reminds us that even when we feel surrounded by danger, God can still protect us if we trust Him. Through this example, we are reminded that faith is stronger than fear and that no matter how bleak things may seem, if you rely on God’s power and believe in His promises, He will equip you with the strength you need to overcome your fears.

Jesus Facing His Fear in Gethsemane

Have you heard of Jesus’ fear in the Garden of Gethsemane? This powerful story of Jesus facing his own fear is found in Mark 14:32-42. In this passage, Jesus is alone in the Garden of Gethsemane, dreading the coming crucifixion and knowing He was about to bear the sins of all people. Scripture says that Jesus was so anguished that He sweat drops of blood (Luke 22:44).

This fear was so intense that He prayed, “Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will” (Mark 14:36). Though this is an example of Jesus facing his fear, it is also an example of faith and surrender to God’s will. Ultimately, Jesus trusted God even though it meant a difficult journey. He reminded us to trust even when we don’t understand.

Conclusion

So, we see that fear is a very real, powerful emotion. It can motivate us to do great things or cause us to crumble under pressure. The Bible is packed with stories showing us how fear can play out.

But ultimately, the Bible is a story of hope. It’s a story of a God who loves us, even when we’re afraid. We can find hope in God no matter what we’re struggling with.
