The Seven Last Words Of Jesus

Jesus Words On The Cross

When someone is near their end and they know it, their last words take on greater significance.

The seven last words of Jesus on the cross give us insight into what things were important to him and thus should be important to us.

Take a journey with me if you will and let’s investigate the 7 last words of Jesus when he hung there on the cross and try to catch a glimpse of what must have been going through his mind.

The Last Seven Words of Jesus On the Cross

Father forgive them for they know not what they do.

Luke 23:33-35

33 When they came to a place called The Skull, they nailed him to the cross. And the criminals were also crucified—one on his right and one on his left.

34 Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice.

35 The crowd watched and the leaders scoffed. “He saved others,” they said, “let him save himself if he is really God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”

The first record of the last words of Jesus is his concern for the hearts of the world. Not just for the ones that were placing Him on the cross, but for those that were scoffing, unconcerned, unbelieving, and even gambling over His clothes.

This concern shows that Jesus cared for the spiritual condition of the world. It was in fact the sins of the world, past, present, and future that were being placed upon Him. He was the sacrificial lamb that would pay the price once and for all for the sins of the world.

The mockers, the scoffers, the unbelieving and those that would profit from His death are all just examples of the types of people Jesus was dying for. That includes you and I. We have all at one point committed one of these types of sins and in all honesty, many others.

Today you will be with me in paradise.

Luke 23:41-42

41 We deserve to die for our crimes, but this man hasn’t done anything wrong.” 42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.”

43 And Jesus replied, “I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

Even though Jesus had the sins of the world being placed upon Him, He didn’t lose sight of the fact that the individual mattered.

When this sinner, looked upon him with belief, Jesus made time and uttered one of His last words directly to a person who had need of Him.

This shows that salvation is not just some universal concept but it is a personal reality. It shows that every man, woman, boy, and girl must come to Jesus in a personal way and ask to be allowed to be part of His kingdom.

Woman, behold your son.

John 19:25-27

25 Standing near the cross were Jesus’ mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary (the wife of Clopas), and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother standing there beside the disciple he loved, he said to her, “Dear woman, here is your son.” 27 And he said to this disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from then on this disciple took her into his home.

Jesus, in the midst of dying, did not forget his family, especially his mother. He made sure that she was taken care of by asking John to take her into his family.

This shows that not only was Jesus concerned for the sins of the world or just a thief but that He had great concern for those closest to Him.

Sometimes we get so caught up in winning the world or winning the worst sinner that we forget that those closest to us also need to be taken care of. We need to remember that our faith and our real belief system are lived out in the home and among our family.

Jesus shows that family was very important to Him as He was dying.

My God, My God, Why have you abandoned me?

Matthew 27:46

46 At about three o’clock, Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” which means “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”

Here we see the sin of the world is laid upon Jesus. I do not believe He felt that He had been abandoned by being placed on the cross. I believe He felt the eyes of God being shifted away from Him and that no longer could He feel the presence of God with Him.

God cannot look upon sin. Because of that, He could no longer fellowship with Jesus. He could no longer be with Him.

Up until that point, Jesus had led a sinless life and had the full presence of God with Him always.

When our sin was being placed upon Him Jesus sensed the withdrawal of God from Him and thus cried out asking why have you abandoned me.

I am thirsty

John 19:28-29

The Death of Jesus

28 Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfill Scripture he said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it up to his lips.

Here we see Jesus proving that He was not some ghost or spirit or another type of manifestation but in fact, He was human and had a real flesh and blood body.

It also fulfills the prophecy that even when he asked for the simplest thing, that no mercy or compassion was given to Him but instead they offered him vinegar instead of a simple cup of water.

It is finished!

John 19:30

30 When Jesus had tasted it, he said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and released his spirit.

It was finished, done, completed. The total purpose and destiny of Jesus had been accomplished. He had done it.

But what had He done?

He had paid for the sins of the world, the sins of the individual, the sins of even His own disciples, friends, and family members. He had paid the price.

The work of the cross of Christ is a finished work. there is no more to add to it.

This is something that men and women have struggled with for years. They keep on trying to add to the work of Jesus on the cross. It is a finished work. It is done! You cannot add to it.

The price for your sins has been paid, past, present, and future. The only requirement that is asked of you is that you accept that payment and start the personal relationship with Him and your heavenly Father.

Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands.

Luke 23:46

46 Then Jesus shouted, “Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands!” And with those words he breathed his last.

The very last thing that Jesus said and did was the very thing that each and every one of us is asked to do. He committed His spirit, His eternal soul into the hands of His Heavenly Father.

With His very last breath he asked for the same thing we are asked to do. We are asked to commit our lives and eternal destinies into the hands of our Heavenly Father.

So the very last words of Jesus are the first words we have to say to have the new life promised by the sacrifice of Jesus.

Will you this day say for yourself the last words of Jesus on the cross?

Will you entrust your spirit, your eternal destiny into His hands?

If you are willing to do so, then I would like to invite you to go to Peace With God. There you will find simple instructions on how you can follow Jesus as He entrusted His spirit into the hands of His Heavenly Father,

Blessings!
