Bible Verses On Giving To Others

Tags:

There are times in everyone’s life that we have an overabundance of possessions; whether it be food, clothing, or even housing; that’s when you find yourself going through your possessions and clearing out the things you no longer want to use. What do you do with those things, donate them to a charitable organization, give them to a friend, or simply throw them away? Most people take an opportunity like this to donate their forgotten and unused items to an organization that will distribute them to the needy, some with and some without cost to the needy person.

bible scripture on giving to others

If you happen to find yourself cleaning your closets then possibly it is time to listen to God and donate those belonging to others who are in need. Think for a minute about how much God has given to you; it would be a perfect time to repay some of that goodness by blessing someone else with something they could really use. When you give to the needy, you are actually glorifying God by fulfilling His command, “give unto others as I have given to you.” In the Bible, we are told that if a man has two shirts and another has none, you should give one of your shirts to that person. It truly makes God smile when you share what you have with someone less fortunate than you; it shows God you hear His wishes and tells Him that you have a loving and giving heart; that you hear and follow exactly what He tells you to do.

The Glory of God shines each time you lovingly give to others from your heart; that action will continually glorify both God and you. It will glorify God in that you have shown Him that you nurture a good heart; it will glorify you because you are working with God and fulfilling his commands. God has given humans everything they need to live and thrive on this earth; the “breath of life” is an excellent example; God bringing His first human creation and prized possession to life by blowing His almighty and glorified breath into the first man’s lungs; a man whom God called Adam, a name which in Arabic means “the servant.”

Bible Verses About Giving To Others

Proverbs 11:24-25 One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.

NOTE: Everything God has given us has been freely given through His glory, through His goodness, love, and mercy. God wanted His prized possessions (humans) to know that this world was not only made for them but they had control of it, even to their “free will” to make decisions such as God did, but to a much lesser degree.

Proverbs 19:17 Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.

NOTE: In this scripture, God is telling you that you will be rewarded for every good deed; sharing what you have with the needy is one of God’s great decrees, therefore, if you have abundance and another is starving, how would you react? Would you do as God instructs, or would you merely turn your head and walk away saving your goods for yourself? If you provide one meal to a family that has nothing you would be considered following God’s guidelines by showing just that one family He has been, and always will be there to provide whatever they need. One meal could mean the difference to a starving person between persevering, finding God in their lives, and merely giving up; for this type of kindness you will be greatly rewarded by your Father in heaven.

Matthew 5:16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

NOTE: This scripture is not telling you to be prideful and boastful at the things you have done; simply it tells you that you are truly following God’s commands by bringing the light of the world into every heart you encounter. Jesus is pure light, there is no darkness in or around Him; moreover, Jesus shatters the darkness and all that goes with it. Look to Father God and His marvelous Son Jesus Christ for all the enlightenment you will ever need on any subject. Just remember, “…ask and it shall be given unto you.”

Matthew 5:42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

NOTE: There are times that you may have been asking for help in the form of food, money, blankets, clothing or some other necessity. If you have the items requested at hand, most will not generally refuse to share them. However, when someone comes to you and wants to borrow something sandals, robe, a shirt, you have a tendency to turn away, and not lend the items. Do you not believe that it is more likely that the borrowed items will be returned, where the given ones will not? Do not become anxious about the borrowed item, for if it is truly yours, God will see to it that it is returned to you.  But you must bless it and allow God to bless you for having it as an offering to someone who is in need.

Luke 3:10-11 “What should we do then?” the crowd asked. John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”

NOTE: Remember the promises Jesus’ made for blessing you with great abundance in return for your heartfelt giving; if you’ve ever wondered where your next meal is coming from; or go without something like clothing, a warm bed to sleep in or a blanket to put over you, then you will never know how wonderful it feels when someone takes it upon themselves to give their heartfelt love for a brother or sister, this love is stated in the material things you need in order to survive on this earth; when others share those things with you, it shows that God is watching over you and both the giving and receiving party will be greatly blessed.

Romans 12:13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

NOTE: Keep in mind that “practicing hospitality” does not exclude any race, color or faith. Being hospitable to someone is merely tending to them; either by taking care of their medical needs, feeding and clothing them, or even inviting and welcoming them into your home. However, in the early days of Jesus’ time on earth, it was the Jewish belief, as were many others that you only took care of your own race. Other races didn’t matter! Not so! Jesus told us to love “everyone” that however, was not what the early Jews believed; just because someone isn’t of the same nationality doesn’t mean that they are not of God and are true believers with God living in their hearts. When Jesus began his teaching so very long ago, there were Jews, Greeks, and Gentiles. God brought his Son Jesus to Israel to teach His chosen people, the Jews, God’s Good News. At that time they were the only ones that had the right to be called the children of God. Since Jesus came to this earth specifically to die for the sins of every person’s sins, both past and future, all believers and followers of The Holy Spirit, Father God, and Jesus the Christ were adopted by God to become His children and heirs.

Philippians 2:3-4 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

NOTE: God is so wonderful to us; He has given us everything and still continues to do so. In this scripture, it is being reiterated that if we are going to help someone less fortunate than ourselves it must not be done with any ulterior motives. You cannot do “good work” for God when you are expecting something in return from the earth. Only acts done through a pure loving heart is something God smiles upon.  Before you claim to be helping others who are in need, first look inside and make sure you are giving to others because you truly do not want to see them go without when you have an overabundance. That is the kind of love God wants us to share directly from the heart.

2 Corinthians 9:6-8 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.

NOTE: When you give help to others and you begin to feel as though what you gave you really wanted to keep for yourself, then your gift is not truly an act of love. It was not given from your heart; we have all done that at one time or another in our life; look at it as if God is asking you “is this your heartfelt gift or are you attempting to impress someone;” if after giving aid to someone the feeling that the gift you gave wasn’t really deserved, or it should have been given in a lesser portion, then you must examine the reasons you are giving. The key to giving from the heart is to be in communication with God; ask if He is pleased with what you are doing; how you are distributing your heart filled gifts and if they are not heart-filled, ask Him to guide you into the circumstances under which you are giving with heartfelt love. God will always let you know if He is pleased with what you are doing. Just spend quiet time with Him and listen. He loves you without end.

Galatians 6:2 Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

NOTE: Our Father wants each of us to know how wonderful the feeling is that you get from helping another who is in need. What you feel when you do give from your heart is blessings coming down from heaven. God will always reward you for your goodness to others and in many forms. You will see them as they come into you. Just be sure you thank our Holy Father for the blessings both in the past, present, and those yet to come. Be glad in the Lord and remember He sent His Son, Jesus Christ to pay the price for our sins, and what a magnificent and awe-inspiring payment he made. Just remember the sufferings that came before the joy on this earth; Thank You, Jesus!

James 2:14-17 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

NOTE: God has made this scripture very clear in the aspect that in order for us to have true faith we must also have deeds to bring that faith to its fullest. If, as stated above, you have no deeds and continue to claim you have faith then where does the faith come from. Your faith is what you are using to help others, to talk to God, to ask Jesus to open your heart and show you the life of a true Christian. You must perform deeds of goodness in order to fulfill your claims of faith. It is very clear what God wants us to do, as a servant to God we must watch out for and assist others that need help. If you see someone sitting alongside the road that has no blanket but yet is shaking from the cold; what would you do, go and get him something warm, or say “God I pray that you keep that man warm” while you continue driving by? Look around you, God sent you, as His child, to bring help to that man, not to turn and continue on your way. If you know what they need…get it for them, if you don’t have a blanket on hand, then go to the nearest store and buy one, or go home and get one from your warm closet and take it to him along with perhaps some food and a warm drink.

Conclusion

In all we do on this earth we must know that God is always looking out for each of us and expects that as a Christian, following Him and His most Holy Son Jesus Christ, we must always look out for and assist when we can, others less fortunate than ourselves.
