What is Lack of Integrity in the Bible?

The Bible is very clear about the importance of integrity in the life of a believer. Proverbs 10:9 says, “He who walks with integrity walks securely, But he who perverts his ways will become known.”

Lack of integrity, therefore, means a lack of honesty and moral principles. It is a deviation from the truth, whether it is in words or actions.

One of the most significant examples of lack of integrity in the Bible is found in the story of Ananias and Sapphira in Acts chapter 5. The couple sold a piece of land and brought a portion of the proceeds to the apostles, claiming that it was the full amount.

However, Peter confronted them, saying, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself?” (Acts 5:3). Ananias and Sapphira lacked integrity by withholding part of the proceeds and lying about it, resulting in their immediate deaths.

Another example is found in the life of King David. He committed adultery with Bathsheba and had her husband, Uriah, killed to cover up his sin (2 Samuel 11:1-27). David’s lack of integrity led to severe consequences, including the death of his child and the betrayal of his son Absalom.

The Consequences of Lacking Integrity

The consequences of lacking integrity are severe and far-reaching. Proverbs 11:3 says, “The integrity of the upright will guide them, But the perversity of the unfaithful will destroy them.”

Lack of integrity can destroy relationships, reputation, and even lead to physical harm.

In the story of Ananias and Sapphira, their lack of integrity resulted in their deaths. In David’s case, his lack of integrity resulted in the death of his child and the betrayal of his son Absalom.

Lack of integrity also has a ripple effect, affecting not only the individual but also those around them. For example, the sin of Achan in Joshua chapter 7 led to the defeat of the Israelites in battle and the death of 36 men.

How to Cultivate a Life of Integrity

Cultivating a life of integrity is essential for every Christian. It requires a commitment to honesty, truthfulness, and strong moral principles. Here are some practical ways to cultivate a life of integrity:

  1. Live transparently: Be open and honest in your words and actions. Don’t try to hide or cover up your mistakes or sins.
  2. Surround yourself with people of integrity: Proverbs 13:20 says, “He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion of fools will be destroyed.” Surround yourself with people who exhibit strong moral principles.
  3. Be accountable: Have people in your life who can hold you accountable for your actions and help you stay on the right path.
  4. Pray for integrity: Ask God to help you cultivate a life of integrity and to give you the strength to resist temptation.

Conclusion

Lack of integrity is a serious issue that can have severe consequences in the life of a Christian. The Bible is clear about the importance of integrity, and it is a characteristic that we should strive to cultivate in our lives. Lack of integrity can lead to destruction, not only for the individual but also for those around them.

As Christians, we are called to live a life of honesty, truthfulness, and strong moral principles. We can cultivate a life of integrity by living transparently, surrounding ourselves with people of integrity, being accountable, and praying for God’s help.

We must also be aware of the dangers of lacking integrity and the consequences that come with it.

In summary, lack of integrity in the Bible refers to a lack of honesty and moral principles, which can lead to severe consequences. We must cultivate a life of integrity by living transparently, surrounding ourselves with people of integrity, being accountable, and praying for God’s help.

Let us strive to live a life of integrity and honor God in all that we do.
