Jesus in the Bible

Jesus in the Old Testament

The Old Testament contains many prophecies about the coming Messiah, who would be the Savior of the world. These prophecies point to Jesus and reveal much about His identity and mission. Here are a few examples:

  • Isaiah 9:6-7: “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end, upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, to order it and establish it with judgment and justice from that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.” This passage speaks of the birth of a Child who would be called Mighty God and would reign forever on the throne of David. Jesus fulfilled this prophecy by being born in Bethlehem and by being the promised King of Israel.
  • Micah 5:2: “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me the One to be Ruler in Israel, whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting.” This prophecy also speaks of the birth of the Messiah in Bethlehem, and it emphasizes His eternal nature. Jesus fulfilled this prophecy by being born in Bethlehem and by being God in human form.
  • Isaiah 53: This chapter describes the suffering and death of the Messiah in great detail, and it reveals that His death would be for the sins of the people. Jesus fulfilled this prophecy by dying on the cross for the sins of the world.

Jesus in the New Testament

The New Testament is primarily focused on the life and ministry of Jesus, and it provides us with a wealth of information about Him. Here are some of the key aspects of Jesus’ ministry as recorded in the New Testament:

Birth and Early Life

The New Testament begins with the birth of Jesus, which took place in Bethlehem. His mother was Mary, a virgin who was visited by an angel and told that she would give birth to the Son of God. The birth of Jesus was miraculous, and it fulfilled the prophecies of the Old Testament.

Ministry of Jesus

Jesus began His public ministry at the age of 30, and He traveled throughout Israel preaching the good news of the Kingdom of God. He performed many miracles, such as healing the sick, feeding the hungry, and raising the dead. He also taught about love, forgiveness, and repentance.

Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus

Despite His many miracles and teachings, Jesus was rejected by many of the religious leaders of His day. He was eventually arrested, tried, and sentenced to death on a cross. However, His death was not the end. Three days later, He rose from the dead, proving that He was indeed the Son of God.

Jesus as the Son of God

The Bible teaches that Jesus is the Son of God, which means that He is divine in nature. Here are a few examples of this:

  • John 1:1-3: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.” This passage from the Gospel of John identifies Jesus as the Word, who was with God in the beginning and is Himself God. This passage affirms Jesus’ divine nature and His role in creating all things.
  • Colossians 1:15-20: “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.” This passage emphasizes Jesus’ role as the Creator and Sustainer of all things, and it also emphasizes His preeminence as the head of the Church.

Jesus as the Savior

The Bible teaches that Jesus came to save us from our sins and to reconcile us to God. Here are a few examples of this:

  • John 3:16-17: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.” This famous passage from the Gospel of John emphasizes God’s love for the world and His desire to save us through faith in Jesus.
  • Acts 4:12: “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” This passage from the Book of Acts emphasizes the exclusivity of salvation through faith in Jesus. There is no other way to be saved except through faith in Him.

Jesus as the Way, the Truth, and the Life

The Bible teaches that Jesus is the only way to God and to eternal life. Here are a few examples of this:

  • John 14:6: “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.'” This famous statement by Jesus emphasizes the exclusivity of salvation through faith in Him.
  • Romans 10:9-10: “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” This passage emphasizes the importance of confessing Jesus as Lord and believing in His resurrection in order to be saved.

Jesus as the Healer

The Bible teaches that Jesus performed many miracles of healing during His earthly ministry. Here are a few examples:

  • Matthew 4:23-24: “And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people. Then His fame went throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all sick people who were afflicted with various diseases and torments, and those who were demon-possessed, epileptics, and paralytics; and He healed them.” This passage describes Jesus’ healing ministry and the widespread fame that He gained as a result.
  • Mark 5:25-34: This passage describes the healing of a woman who had been suffering from a bleeding disorder for many years. She had spent all her money on doctors, but none of them could help her. When she heard about Jesus, she went to Him and touched the hem of His garment, and she was instantly healed. This story is a powerful example of Jesus’ ability to heal, even in the most desperate cases.

Jesus as the Baptizer in the Holy Spirit

The Bible teaches that Jesus is the Baptizer in the Holy Spirit, who empowers believers to live a life of faith and witness. Here are a few examples of this:

  • Acts 1:4-5: “And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, ‘which,’ He said, ‘you have heard from Me; for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.'” This passage describes Jesus’ instruction to His disciples to wait in Jerusalem for the Holy Spirit to come upon them.
  • Acts 2:1-4: This passage describes the coming of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost when the disciples were filled with the Spirit and began to speak in other tongues. This event marked the beginning of the Church and the empowerment of believers to witness for Christ.

Jesus’ Second Coming

The Bible teaches that Jesus will return to the earth one day to judge the living and the dead and to establish His eternal kingdom. Here are a few examples of this:

  • Acts 1:11: “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.” This passage describes the promise of Jesus’ return, which was given to His disciples at the time of His ascension.
  • Revelation 22:12-13: “And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.” This passage from the Book of Revelation emphasizes the imminence of Jesus’ return and His role as the judge of all.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Bible teaches us a great deal about Jesus and provides us with a deep understanding of His divine nature, teachings, and impact on the world. Jesus is the Son of God, the Savior of the world, the Way, the Truth, and the Life, the Healer, and the Baptizer in the Holy Spirit.

His death on the cross for our sins, His resurrection, and His promise to return to establish His eternal kingdom are the foundation of Christian faith and practice.
