15 Bible Verses About Lying

Tags:

“Oh, it’s just a little fib!” Have you ever had that thought go through your mind? Yes, I know, we all have at one time or another; but look back at that “fib,” and if you look at it realistically, you will admit that there is no such thing as a “little or small” lie; a lie is a lie no matter what it’s about; below we will be discussing why it’s so important, to tell the truth about everything.

What do you think a lie is? Perhaps it’s a way of telling someone something that will make you look better as a person in their eyes, or to hide a true event or action. No matter what you call it, or think it’s okay to do, lying is of an evil disposition; it’s the work of Satan’s influence, a liar, and in fact, the Father of all Lies. When you tell a lie, no matter how big or small, you are doing the devil’s work. Remember that Jesus, above all, never told a lie; He was, is, and always will be the “truth, the way, and the life.” Gear yourself in that direction, work with Jesus, and stop yourself from telling a lie before it comes out of your mouth. Below are a few scriptures from the Bible which will help you from telling lies. These Bible verses show how our Holy Lord Jesus feels about liars and how they can reach out to Him for help to avoid telling lies.

15 Bible Verses About Lying

You won’t die!” the serpent said to the woman.

Genesis 3:4

Do not steal. “Do not deceive or cheat one another.”

 Leviticus 19:11

I hate and abhor all falsehood, but I love your instructions.

Psalm 119:163

The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in those who tell the truth.

Proverbs 12:22

The godly hate lies; the wicked cause shame and disgrace.

Proverbs 13:5

An honest witness does not lie; a false witness breaths lies.

Proverbs 14:5

Eloquent words are not fitting for a fool; even less are lies fitting for a ruler.

Proverbs 17:7

Israel surrounds me with lies and deceit, but Judah still obeys God and is faithful to the Holy One.

Hosea 11:12

The remnant of Israel will do no wrong; they will never tell lies or deceive one another. They will eat and sleep in safety, and no one will make them afraid.

Zephaniah 3:13

Jesus told them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, because I have come to you from God. I am not here on my own, but he sent me. Why can’t you understand what I am saying” It’s because you can’t even hear me!  For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with the character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. So when I tell the truth, you just naturally don’t believe me! Which of you can truthfully accuse me of sin? And since I am telling you the truth, why don’t you believe me? Anyone who belongs to God listens gladly to the words of God. But you don’t listen because you don’t belong to God.”

John 8:42-47

NOTE: Read through these scriptures again, and see if you can find anything that relates to something that has happened to you lately. Notice how firm Jesus is about telling the truth. If you have it in you to lie, even a small lie, then you need to go back to the drawing board and ask Jesus to help you combat that devil-filled situation. If you catch yourself starting to tell a lie, stop and rephrase the sentence so that you are not lying but in actuality, telling the full truth. It’s not as hard as you may think to open your mouth and allow the words Jesus would say to come out.

But there was a certain man named Ananias who, with his wife, Sapphira, sold some property. He brought part of the money to the apostles, claiming it was the full amount. With his wife’s consent, he kept the rest. Then Peter said, “Ananias, why have you let Satan fill your heart? You lied to the Holy Spirit, and you kept some of the money for yourself. The property was yours to sell or not sell, as you wished. And after selling it, the money was also yours to give away. How could you do a thing like this? You weren’t lying to us but to God!”

Acts 5:1-4

NOTE: Ananias and his wife both died that day, not because they sold their property and wanted to keep a part of the money from that sale; they were under the misguided assumption that they had to donate every penny they received; but rather, Ananias and Sapphira both lied to God and God abhors a liar, and they paid the ultimate price. God didn’t ask anyone to give everything they had but to be honest about what they did give. These contributions were important because the money was being used for the camp’s upkeep and furtherance of all God’s people. Everyone contributed what they could for the entire camp to survive.

Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds. Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him. In this new life, it doesn’t matter if you are a Jew or a Gentile, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbaric, Scythian, slave nor free, but  Christ is all and in all.

Colossians 3:9-11

Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons. These people are hypocrites and liars, and their consciences are dead.

1 Timothy 4:1-2

If you are wise and understand Gods ways, prove it by living an honorable life, doing good works with the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in your heart, don’t cover up the truth with boasting and lying. For jealousy and selfishness are not God’s kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual and demonic. For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind. But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentile at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere. And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness.

James 3:13-16

Blessed are those who wash their robes. They will be permitted to enter through the gates of the city and eat the fruit from the tree of life. Outside the city are the dogs—the sorcerers, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idol worshipers, and all who love to live a lie.

Revelation 22:14-15

Conclusion

In conclusion of this article, note that there is no such thing as a little lie or small fib; a lie is a lie, no matter how small. Turning away from telling lies may be somewhat difficult for you since all of us have it in our mind that “oh, that little fib won’t hurt,” but it does; you have no idea how far and wide a small lie will go, and it could make others feel small or inadequate depending on the lie. You must talk to Jesus about how to completely stop lying and follow only His truth. Study the above scriptures, then see how many more you can find in the Bible that explain why it is so bad to tell even a “little fib.”
