What Is Peace?
Peace, from a Christian perspective, embodies a profound and holistic concept that transcends mere absence of conflict. It is deeply rooted in the biblical narrative and the teachings of Jesus Christ. In the Bible, the Hebrew word “Shalom” and the Greek word “Eirene” are often translated as “peace,” but they encompass much more than just tranquility or lack of war.
Shalom, in the Old Testament, conveys completeness, wholeness, health, welfare, safety, soundness, tranquility, prosperity, perfectness, fullness, rest, harmony, and the absence of agitation or discord. This peace is seen as a gift from God and an integral part of the covenant relationship between God and His people.
In the New Testament, Jesus Christ is often referred to as the Prince of Peace. His teachings and actions demonstrate peace as a state of being that reconciles and restores. Jesus’ offer of peace goes beyond the worldly understanding; it is a peace that “transcends all understanding” (Philippians 4:7). This peace is not dependent on external circumstances but is a result of being in right relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
Furthermore, peace in Christianity is also understood as a fruit of the Holy Spirit, as stated in Galatians 5:22-23. It is a quality that should characterize the life of a believer. It involves a state of moral and spiritual integrity and well-being that enables an individual to face trials and difficulties with a calm and steadfast spirit.
In a broader sense, Christian peace also encompasses peace with others. It involves reconciliation, forgiveness, and love in relationships, urging believers to live in harmony and unity with one another, following the example of Christ.
In essence, peace in Christianity is a comprehensive term that denotes an inner sense of well-being and fulfillment that comes from God, and it extends to the fostering of harmonious relationships and a just and compassionate society.
