What Is Righteousness?

Righteousness, in Christian theology, is a multifaceted concept deeply rooted in the relationship between God and humanity. It primarily involves living in a way that is aligned with God’s will and character, as revealed in the Bible. This alignment is both a status and a journey: a status granted by God through faith in Jesus Christ, and a journey of growing in godly character and behavior.

At its core, righteousness is about right standing with God. This is not something humans can achieve on their own; it is a gift from God, given through faith in Jesus Christ. This aspect of righteousness is often referred to as “imputed righteousness.” It’s the idea that through faith, Christ’s own righteousness is credited to believers, thus reconciling them with God.

However, righteousness also has a practical, ethical dimension. It involves living in a way that reflects God’s nature – characterized by love, justice, mercy, and holiness. This is sometimes called “practical righteousness.” It’s about the transformation of character and actions, empowered by the Holy Spirit, to live in a way that honors God and serves others. This includes personal morality, fairness in dealing with others, and actively seeking justice and peace.

In summary, righteousness in Christian thought is both a status granted by God through faith in Christ and a way of life that reflects God’s character. It is about being right with God and living rightly in the world, guided and empowered by the Holy Spirit.
