Characteristics of a Good and Faithful Servant: Traits to Look for in a Loyal Employee or Volunteer.

As Christians, we are called to be servants of God and to serve others with love and humility. But what does it mean to be a good and faithful servant? In Matthew 25:21, Jesus tells the parable of the talents, in which a master entrusts his servants with different amounts of money.

The servants who invest their talents and earn a return are praised as good and faithful, while the one who buries his talent is rebuked.

So, what are the characteristics of a good and faithful servant? Firstly, a good servant is faithful in small things.

In Luke 16:10, Jesus says, “He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much.” This means that a faithful servant is diligent and responsible in the small tasks they are given, recognizing that they are ultimately serving God in all things.

Secondly, a good servant is humble and puts others before themselves. In Philippians 2:3-4, Paul writes, “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.

Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.” A faithful servant recognizes that their service is not about their own glory or recognition, but about serving others and ultimately serving God.

The Bible also teaches us about the importance of servanthood and humility. In Matthew 20:28, Jesus says that he came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. In Philippians 2:3-4, we are called to do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility to consider others better than ourselves.

A faithful servant is also obedient to God’s word and training. In Galatians 5:13, we are called to serve one another in love. In 2 Timothy 2:15, we are told to study to show ourselves approved unto God, workmen who need not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Characteristics

A good and faithful servant is characterized by many qualities, including:

  • Love: A faithful servant loves God and others with all their heart, soul, and mind (Matthew 22:37-39).

  • Hospitality: A faithful servant is hospitable and welcomes others into their home and life (Hebrews 13:2).
  • Meekness: A faithful servant is meek and gentle, not harsh or overbearing (Matthew 5:5).

  • Joy of the Master: A faithful servant experiences the joy of the master when they hear the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:23).

In conclusion, a faithful servant is a person who loves God and others, is sacrificial and humble, responsible and trustworthy, a good steward, hospitable, meek, self-controlled, able to teach, imitates Christ, and experiences the joy of the master.

They are motivated by love to serve God and others, and they expect to suffer for the sake of the gospel.

Characteristics of a Good and Faithful Servant

As Christians, we are called to be good and faithful servants of Jesus Christ. Being a good and faithful servant means living a life that is pleasing to God and serving others with humility, love, and sacrifice. In this section, we will discuss the characteristics of a good and faithful servant.

Humble

Humble servants recognize that they are not the center of the universe. They are meek and do not seek to exalt themselves. Instead, they put others before themselves and serve with a heart of humility. Jesus is the perfect example of humility. He came to serve, not to be served (Matthew 20:28).

Available

Good and faithful servants are always available to serve. They are not too busy or too important to help others. They are willing to put their own plans aside to meet the needs of others.

David was an example of someone who made himself available to serve God. He was a shepherd boy who became a king, but he never lost his heart for serving God.

Obedient

Good and faithful servants are obedient to God’s word. They follow His commands and do what He asks them to do. They are not rebellious or disobedient. They understand that obedience is a sign of love for God. Jesus said, “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14:15).

Self-Controlled

Good and faithful servants have self-control. They are not easily swayed by their emotions or desires. They are disciplined and able to control their thoughts, words, and actions. They understand that self-control is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).

Sacrificial

Good and faithful servants are willing to make sacrifices for others. They put the needs of others before their own. They understand that serving others often requires sacrifice. Jesus is the ultimate example of sacrificial love. He gave His life for us on the cross.

Motivated by Love

Good and faithful servants are motivated by love. They love God and love others. Their service is not motivated by selfish ambition or a desire for recognition.

They serve because they love God and want to show His love to others. Jesus said, “By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35).

In conclusion, being a good and faithful servant requires humility, availability, obedience, self-control, sacrifice, and love.

As we imitate Christ and follow His example, we can become good stewards of the gifts and talents God has given us. We can serve Him and others with joy and purpose, knowing that our reward is in heaven (Matthew 25:23).

The Importance of Being a Good and Faithful Servant

As Christians, we are called to be good and faithful servants of Jesus Christ. Being a good and faithful servant means that we are committed to serving God with all our hearts, minds, and souls. It means that we are willing to put aside our own desires and ambitions and instead focus on serving others and sharing the love of Christ with them.

Reward

One of the most important reasons to be a good and faithful servant is the reward that awaits us. In Matthew 25:23, Jesus says, “Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things.

Enter into the joy of your lord.” This is a powerful reminder that our service to God is not in vain and that we will be rewarded for our faithfulness.

However, it’s important to note that our motivation for serving should not be solely based on the reward we will receive. Rather, we should be motivated by love for God and a desire to serve Him with all our hearts.

Imitate Christ

Ultimately, being a good and faithful servant means imitating Christ. As David says in Psalm 40:8, “I delight to do Your will, O my God, and Your law is within my heart.” We should strive to have the same attitude of obedience and submission to God’s will that Jesus had.

In the New Testament, we see that Jesus was a perfect example of what it means to be a good and faithful servant. He came to serve, not to be served, and He gave His life as a sacrifice for our sins. As we seek to imitate Him, we too can become good and faithful servants of God.

In conclusion, being a good and faithful servant is an important aspect of our Christian walk. We should strive to develop the characteristics of a good and faithful servant and imitate Christ in all that we do. As we do so, we can look forward to the reward that awaits us and the glory that will be given to God.

How to Become a Good and Faithful Servant

As Christians, we are called to be good and faithful servants of God. This means that we must be responsible and accountable for the gifts and talents that God has given us. In this section, we will discuss the three main aspects of becoming a good and faithful servant: Training, Stewardship, and Serving Others.

Training

In order to become a good and faithful servant, we must first be trained in the ways of the Lord. This means that we must read and study the Bible, attend church regularly, and seek out opportunities for spiritual growth. We must also be willing to learn from others who are more experienced in the faith.

Stewardship

Stewardship is another important aspect of becoming a good and faithful servant. We must be good stewards of everything that God has given us, including our time, talents, and resources.

This means that we must use these things wisely and for the glory of God. We must also be willing to give sacrificially and be motivated by love for God and others.

Serving Others

Finally, we must be willing to serve others. Jesus himself said that the greatest among us will be those who serve others.

We must be meek and humble, imitating the example of Christ who came to serve and not to be served. We must be willing to preach the gospel, to teach and disciple others, and to show hospitality to those in need.

In Matthew 25:23, Jesus says, “Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.”

As we strive to become good and faithful servants, let us do so with a heart of self-control, and with the expectation that we may suffer for the sake of the gospel. Let us imitate the example of David, who said in Psalm 119:125, “I am your servant; give me understanding, that I may know your testimonies.”

Conclusion

In the New Testament, the concept of servanthood is emphasized again and again. As we seek to become good and faithful servants, let us remember that we are serving God and not man. Let us be motivated by love for God and for others, and let us do everything for the glory of God.
