Bible Verses About Light

ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS GOD ORDERED FOR THIS PLANET WAS “LIGHT!” WHAT IS “LIGHT”? WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

When God decided to build this universe we are in, He looked into the void and saw nothing but darkness; He then spoke the words “let there be light!” and there was light. Why was light important to God, first because He is a being of Light, there is no darkness near God, He is pure and full light. In this article, we will go through several scriptures explaining what light is and why it’s so important to us.

Light is important not just because God is a being of light, but also because you cannot see in the darkness; you stumble and fall when you do not know where you are going; but you can travel without stumbling if you are surrounded by light and can see each step you take and what obstacles may bar your way.

Obviously, one of the first reasons it is essential to have light is Lucifer, or Satan; he has several names but each description is in reference to his darkness. The meaning of the name Lucifer was “light bearer” and “the morning star.” Lucifer was adored by God until God found the darkness in his heart. He found that Lucifer wanted to have a seat in heaven above God; he wanted to rule heaven and recruited 1/3 of God’s angels to follow him. Knowing everything, God felt Lucifer’s heart and banished him and his followers to a pit deep within the earth, to be held forever. The following are scriptures that give an understanding of why there is “light” in the world.

Bible Verses About Light

Genesis 1:3-4 Then God said, “let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day” and the darkness “night.”

Psalm 36:9 For you are the fountain of life, the light by which we see.

Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.

Proverbs 4:18 The way of righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, which shines ever brighter until the full light of day.

Proverbs 6:23 For their command is a lamp and their instruction a light; their corrective discipline is the way to life.

Isaiah 42:6 I, the Lord, have called you to demonstrate my righteousness. I will take you by the hand and guard you, and I will give you to my people Israel, as a symbol of my covenant with them. And you will be a light to guide the nations.

Isaiah 49:6 He says, “You will do more than restore the people of Israel to me. I will make you a light to the Gentiles, and you will bring my salvation to the ends of the earth.”

Isaiah 60:1-3 Arise, Jerusalem! Let your light shine for all to see. For the glory of the Lord rises to shine on you. Darkness as black as night covers all the nations of the earth, but the glory of the Lord rises and appears over you. All nations will come to your light; mighty kings will come to see your radiance.

Daniel 12:3 Those who are wise will shine as bright as the sky, and those who lead many to righteousness will shine like the stars forever.

Matthew 5:14-16 You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is paced on a stand, where it gives light to everyone n the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.

Luke 8:16-17 No one lights a lamp and then covers it with a bowl or hides it under a bed. A lamp is placed on a stand, where its light can be seen by all who enter the house. For all that is secret will eventually be brought into the open, and everything that is concealed will be brought to light and made known to all.

John 1:4-9 The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it. God sent a man, John the Baptist, to tell about the light so that everyone might believe because of his testimony. John himself was not the light he was simply a witness to tell about the light. The one who was the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.

John 8:12 Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”

John 9:5 “But while I am here in the world, I am the light of the world.”

John 12:35 Jesus replied, “My light will shine for you just a little longer. Walk in the light while you can, so the darkness will not overtake you. Those who walk in the darkness cannot see where they are going. Put your trust in the light while there is still time; then you will become children of the light.”

Acts 13:47 For the Lord gave us this command when he said, “I have made you a light to the Gentiles, to bring salvation to the farthest corners of the earth.”

2 Corinthians 4:6-7 For God, who said, “Let there be light in the darkness,” has made this light shine in our hearts so we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ. We have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves.

Ephesians 5:8-9 For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light! For this light within you produces only what is good and right and true.

Ephesians 5:13-14 But their evil intentions will be exposed when the light shines on them, for the light makes everything visible. This is why it is said, “Awake, O sleeper, rise up from the dead, and Christ will give you light.”

Philippians 2:14-15 Do everything without complaining and arguing, so that no one can criticize you. Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people.

Conclusion

Read through the above scriptures, study them, and you will find that your heart is growing in the light; the light of Jesus that is. Once you find that place with the Son of God, you will never want to turn back to the darkness again.
