Bible Verses About Giving And Developing A Lifestyle Of Generosity

Developing a Lifestyle of Generosity

The Bible talks quite a bit about the subject of money and giving. Unfortunately, it has been abused by those that would want to use those verses for their own personal gain.

If you have a preacher like that, THROW HIM OUT!.

This has caused many of us who try to be ethical in the use of Bible verses about giving to handle this subject with gentle hands.

Personally, at my church, we choose not to take a public offering. Instead we have a box in the back of the church that people can choose for themselves whether or not they want to give. I like this approach because it places the responsibility of having a generous spirit with the individual. It also alleviates the bad reputation many churches have of only caring about people’s money.

So come with me and take a look at these verses about giving and you can decide for yourself what God would have you to do with your giving.

Bible Verses About Giving In The Old Testament

Genesis 14:18-20

18 And Melchizedek, the king of Salem and a priest of God Most High, brought Abram some bread and wine. 19 Melchizedek blessed Abram with this blessing: “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth.

20 And blessed be God Most High, who has defeated your enemies for you.” Then Abram gave Melchizedek a tenth of all the goods he had recovered.

Leviticus 27:30

30 “One-tenth of the produce of the land, whether grain from the fields or fruit from the trees, belongs to the LORD and must be set apart to him as holy

Numbers 18:21

21 As for the tribe of Levi, your relatives, I will compensate them for their service in the Tabernacle. Instead of an allotment of land, I will give them the tithes from the entire land of Israel.

Deuteronomy 12:4-6

4 “Do not worship the LORD your God in the way these pagan peoples worship their gods. 5 Rather, you must seek the LORD your God at the place of worship he himself will choose from among all the tribes—the place where his name will be honored. 6 There you will bring your burnt offerings, your sacrifices, your tithes, your sacred offerings, your offerings to fulfill a vow, your voluntary offerings, and your offerings of the firstborn animals of your herds and flocks.

Malachi 3:7-9

7 Ever since the days of your ancestors, you have scorned my decrees and failed to obey them. Now return to me, and I will return to you,” says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies. “But you ask, ‘How can we return when we have never gone away?’

8 “Should people cheat God? Yet you have cheated me! “But you ask, ‘What do you mean? When did we ever cheat you?’ “You have cheated me of the tithes and offerings due to me. 9 You are under a curse, for your whole nation has been cheating me.

Proverbs 28:27

27 Whoever gives to the poor will lack nothing, but those who close their eyes to poverty will be cursed.

Proverbs 11:24

24 Give freely and become more wealthy; be stingy and lose everything.

Scriptures on Giving in the New Testament

Matthew 23:23

23 “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but you ignore the more important aspects of the law—justice, mercy, and faith. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things.

Matthew 6:2-4

2 When you give to someone in need, don’t do as the hypocrites do—blowing trumpets in the synagogues and streets to call attention to their acts of charity! I tell you the truth, they have received all the reward they will ever get. 3 But when you give to someone in need, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. 4 Give your gifts in private, and your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.

1 Timothy 6:17-19

17 Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment. 18 Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others. 19 By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so that they may experience true life.

2 Corinthians 9:6-7

6 Remember this—a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop. 7 You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.”

Luke 21:1-4

The Widow’s Offering

1 While Jesus was in the Temple, he watched the rich people dropping their gifts in the collection box. 2 Then a poor widow came by and dropped in two small coins.

3 “I tell you the truth,” Jesus said, “this poor widow has given more than all the rest of them. 4 For they have given a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she has.”

My Final Thoughts On Giving And Being Generous

I hope you can see how important the art of giving really is. It is not about just giving a tenth. It is about how generous our hearts are.

The widow woman had the most generous heart of all. It was not about the amount she gave, but about how generous she wanted to be.

I believe today that if we will allow God to develop in us a generous heart, then the need for manipulation and unethical practices to try to get people to give will end. Not only that, but we will see people become wiser in who they give to.

It is pretty obvious that a person living in a mansion and flying Leer jets around the world is only generous to himself. Who needs a mansion? Flying coach has always sufficed when I had to fly.

Blessings to you all!
