David – A Man After God’s Own Heart
David is one of my favorite Bible characters. He is a man after God’s heart, and his story is of faith and perseverance.
Even when things were tough, David never stopped praising God. He seemed to step up his worship when things were at their worst. In 2 Samuel 22:1, David says, “I will extol the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips.”
David knew that God was with him through thick and thin, and he never hesitated to give God the glory. David’s example teaches us that we should never give up on praising God, even in the darkest of times.
Job – Worshiping During Pain and Loss
Job is an excellent example of someone who praised God in hard times.
He was going through a lot—losing his possessions, health, and even his children. But he continued to worship God, knowing that He was in control. Job never stopped trusting in God, even when things were at their worst.
During all that pain and loss, Job still found the strength to give God glory. That’s something we can all learn from. When going through tough times, it’s important to keep worshiping God, no matter what. He is always faithful, even when we’re not.
Hannah – Praying Through Adversity
Desperate to have a baby, Hannah couldn’t stop praying. She was so distraught that Eli, the priest, thought she was drunk. But Hannah was pouring out her soul to God, begging for His intervention. Finally, God answered her prayer, and she gave birth to Samuel.
Hannah’s story is an excellent example of how to pray through adversity. When we are facing tough times, we can turn to God in prayer. He is always ready and willing to listen. We may not always get the answer we want, but we can trust that God knows what is best for us.
Daniel – Steadfastly Praising, Even in Captivity
The book of Daniel tells the story of a young man who was carried off to captivity in Babylon. He and his friends refused to eat the food provided for them because it went against their religious beliefs.
Instead, they praised God for who He is and what He has done. Even though they were in a difficult situation, they did not let it get them down. Instead, they remained steadfast in their praise.
Daniel and his friends were eventually thrown into a den of lions, but God protected them and they were unharmed. This shows that no matter what situation we find ourselves in, we can always choose to praise God.
Esther – Faithfully Interceding in Life-Threatening Circumstances
The next example we see of praising God in hard times is Esther. If you recall, Esther was a Jewish girl who was forcibly taken from her home and made to be the king’s new queen.
Now, the king had a wicked advisor named Haman, who hated all the Jews. And so Haman devised a plan to kill all the Jews in the kingdom.
When Esther learned about this plan, she knew she had to do something. But she also knew that if she went to the king without being summoned, she could be put to death.
So Esther asked all the Jews in the kingdom to fast and pray for her for three days. And then, she went before the king and interceded on behalf of her people.
Thanks to Esther’s bravery, the king spared the lives of the Jews. And so we see another example of praising God in hard times.
Paul and Silas – Singing Hymns in Prison
You may not feel like singing hymns while in prison, but that’s precisely what Paul and Silas did in Acts 16.
They had been severely beaten and thrown in jail for healing a girl possessed by an evil spirit. But instead of wallowing in self-pity, they sang hymns to God at the top of their lungs.
Their singing was so loud that it caught the attention of the other prisoners, who were then saved by Paul and Silas’ message of hope.
So the next time you find yourself in a dark place, remember Paul and Silas and let their story inspire you to praise God, even in the hardest times.
Conclusion
These biblical characters turned to prayer when difficulties arose and praised God for His goodness. During their hard times, they found comfort and strength in Him. If you’re going through a tough time, take heart—you’re not alone. God is with you, and He will help you through it.
