Lessons from Mary, the Mother of Jesus

Submission to God’s Will

In the very beginning of the Gospel of Luke, we find Mary engaged to Joseph, when the angel Gabriel appears before her, announcing that she has been chosen to bring the Messiah into the world (Luke 1:26-38). Initially startled, Mary listens attentively as Gabriel explains the divine purpose behind her selection.

Despite the potential challenges she would face, Mary exemplifies perfect submission to the Lord’s will with her humble response: “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word”(Luke 1:38).

As believers, we can learn from her willingness to accept God’s plans for our lives, fully trusting in His wisdom and love. When we yield to God’s will, no matter how difficult it may seem, our faith will be strengthened, and we will come to understand the perfect purpose behind each plan He reveals to us.

Faith During Uncertainty

Humanly speaking, Mary had every reason to doubt the angel’s message she received. However, instead of allowing anxiety or fear to consume her, Mary approached the situation with faith, believing that nothing is impossible with God (Luke 1:37).

Her willingness to endure potential ridicule, isolation, and misunderstanding from her community demonstrates the depth of her trust in God.

In our own lives, we too will face situations where we grow uncertain or fearful. Following Mary’s example can give us the strength to move forward with faith, placing our cares in the hands of God, who works all things for good (Romans 8:28).

Embracing Prophetic Words

In the first chapter of the Gospel of Luke, we encounter Mary’s cousin Elizabeth, who is also miraculously pregnant with John the Baptist.

Upon meeting her, Elizabeth is filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesies over Mary, proclaiming her blessed among women and the fruit of her womb ultimately blessed (Luke 1:42). As a result, Mary is compelled to sing the Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55), a song of praise to the Lord for the great things He has done.

Embracing prophetic words and praising God for them demonstrates a heart open to the Lord’s workings. In our Christian lives, we should also be prepared to receive words of encouragement, prophecy, and exhortation from fellow believers, as they can edify and strengthen our walk with God.

The Power of Prayer

The Bible shows Mary as a woman of prayer, frequently retreating to her private chambers, alone or in the company of others, to pour out her heart to the Lord.

From the moment of Jesus’ crucifixion (John 19:25), throughout the days leading up to Pentecost (Acts 1:14), Mary continually laid her concerns before God, trusting in His faithful care.

This is a powerful testimony of a life led in close communion with God, which should inspire us as believers to engage in daily personal prayer.

When we develop a consistent prayer life, we establish a deeper connection with our Heavenly Father, placing our concerns and gratitude before Him and allowing Him to guide us.

Fostering A Spiritual Family

Mary was not only the earthly mother of Jesus but also an integral part of His spiritual family. She supported His ministry by having faith in His miraculous works and being present at significant points in His life (John 2:1-11).

Additionally, Mary provided guidance (Mark 3:31-35) and prayerful support (Acts 1:14) to the early Christians.

In our Christian journey, we should aim to build and maintain strong relationships with our spiritual family, recognizing that our fellow believers play a vital role in our growth and walk with God.

By fostering these connections, we can encourage, support, and learn from one another, allowing the love of Christ to serve as the foundation of all our interactions.

Demonstrating Love and Compassion

Throughout her life, Mary displayed a loving and compassionate heart. She put others’ needs above her own, nurturing and guiding Jesus into adulthood. Even when faced with her son’s unjust crucifixion, Mary remained steadfast by Jesus’ side, providing comfort to the apostle John in her final moments with her son (John 19:25-27).

We can learn from Mary’s selfless love and compassion, taking these traits and integrating them into our everyday lives. By demonstrating acts of kindness and being a source of love for those around us, we become more like Jesus and show the world that we are His followers (John 13:35).

Perseverance in the Face of Adversity

Mary’s life was marked by untold trials and tribulations. Despite this, she never wavered in her faith or love for God. Throughout the journey, Mary was discerning and wise, treasuring the words of the Lord in her heart, for she understood their value (Luke 2:19, 51).

After Jesus’ crucifixion, she was among the 120 believers assembled in Jerusalem, praying together as they awaited the outpouring of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:14).

As Mary’s example demonstrates, perseverance in the face of adversity is a powerful testimony to our faith in God. In the midst of trials, we can trust that God will see us through, and that He uses our journey to mold us into instruments of His love and grace.

Conclusion

The life of Mary, the mother of Jesus, is an extraordinary example of faith, submission, and love. From her humble and complete acceptance of the Lord’s will to her unwavering support for her son and His ministry, Mary’s life of devotion serves as an inspiration for all believers today.

In adopting Mary’s lessons into our daily walks with Jesus, we can further embrace a life marked by submission to God, commitment to prayer, unwavering faith in uncertainty, prophetic declarations, nurturing our spiritual family, acts of love and compassion, and perseverance through adversity.

As we learn from Mary’s remarkable life, may we respond with a renewed commitment to allowing the Lord to guide our lives. In so doing, we align our hearts with the purposes and plans of our Heavenly Father so that we might grow closer to Jesus and display the light of His love to the world around us.
